1.
Make sure your have Administrator privileges in Windows. |
| |
2.
In the LAN: Create
a Windows user profile for each student. |
| |
| |
If you are using a LAN, it is highly advisable to use "server-side
user profiles". This will allow the users to use any of the client computers. See your Windows manual for
more information.
If you are using ony one PC, go to Start Menu | Settings
| Control Panel | User accounts. |
| |
3.
On the LAN server: Create
a folder labeled "Shared VTrain documents". |
| |
| |
For example, teachers can store their Decks of flashcards in this folder
to make them available to all students.
You can do this from the Windows Explorer.
This subdirectory should be shared with all users, but their access permission should be read-only. This way, only the network
Administrator will be able to modify the contents of this folder. To do this, start Windows Explorer, open the
context menu
(right click): Properties | Sharing | Permissions. See the Help file of the program for information about Write-protected files. |
| |
4.
On the client PC: Assign
a drive letter (for example V:) to the hard drive of the server on which you previously created the "Shared
VTrain documents" folder. |
| |
| |
See your Windows manual for more information.
If you are using only one
PC, you may skip this step. |
| |
5.
On the client PC: Install
VTrain. |
| |
| |
Run the installation file of VTrain and follow the instructions. |
| |
6.
On the client PC: Create
a Cardfile. This Cardfile will later be given to each one of the users. |
| |
| |
To create a Cardfile, choose File
menu | New cardfile.
Fill in the dialog box as follows: write a name for the Cardfile into the Name field, for example MyCardfile, and specify a number
of boxes. Please know that 12 boxes are enough to cover a year.
Please do not edit the Directory field. Finally, press Ok. |
| |
7.
On the client PC: If
you want to, you can fill the Cardfile with a Deck of cards from the "Shared VTrain documents" folder. |
| |
| |
If you are using a LAN, the Deck must be located on the network drive you
previously labeled V:.
If you are using only one
PC, do not fill
the Cardfile with Decks located on the same hard disk. |
| |
8.
On the client PC: Exit
VTrain. |
| |
| |
Save changes to the Cardfile (File
menu | Save all) and exit VTrain. |
| |
9.
Now, how will each user get their copy of the Cardfile? |
| |
| |
The goal of the following two steps is to trick VTrain to lead it to create
one copy of the Cardfile for each user automatically.
| |
Technical info for geeks:
We will take advantage of the fact that VTrain 5.2 and newer versions refuse to handle documents located in the
installation folder (C:\Program files\VTrain\). If you force VTrain to load a document from there, it will copy it into the
My Documents folder of the current user:
C:\Users\<User name>\My Documents\VTrain
or
C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\
My Documents\VTrain
This way, each user will create a copy of your Cardfile unwittingly the first time he or she starts VTrain. |
| |
10.
On the client PC: Move
the Cardfile to the installation folder of VTrain. |
| |
| |
More specifically, you need to move the files that define the Cardfile (MyCardfile.bsy, .bar, .b1, .b2,
etc.) to the following location:
C:\Program files\VTrain\Data
In Windows Vista/7, you
will need Administrator privileges to do this. |
| |
11.
On the client PC: Edit
the settings file as follows... |
| |
| |
The settings file for VTrain, train.ini, is located in one of the following folders:
C:\Users\<User name>\Application Data\VTrain
or
C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Appdata\VTrain
or
C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Application
Data\VTrain
Open this file either by double clicking on it or with the Windows Notepad (Start menu | All programs | Accessories | Notepad).
From there, search for the following two code lines and modify them as follows:
WorkingDirectory=C:\Program files\VTrain\Data

Boxname=C:\Program files\VTrain\Data\MyCardfile.bsy
(Of course, you have to write whatever name you gave to your Cardfile
sinstead of MyCardfile.)
| |
12.
In the LAN: Transfer
the operating system as it is from the client PC to all other client PCs connected to the LAN. |
| |
| |
It is highly advised to use a so-called "image file" to do this.
As an alternative, you can perform steps 4 to 11 on each one of the client computers.
If you are using only one
PC, you may skip this step. |
| |
13.
On each one of the client PCs: Enter your Registration Key. |
| |
| |
Enter the registration key you obtained from the authors of the software.
This will convert the trial version into a full version.
You can do this from Help menu | Enter your key...
| |
Great! Now's the time for a well-deserved cup of coffee... |
| |
14.
On any of the client PCs: Let
each user login to Windows and launch VTrain. |
| |
| |
As mentioned in step 9, when a user runs VTrain for the first time, the
program will copy the MyCardfile Cardfile you created before to the My Documents folder of that user:
C:\Users\<User name>\My Documents\VTrain
or
C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\
My Documents\VTrain |
| |
15.
Now for good... |
