Albanian is a language isolate within the Indoeuropean family of languages. It is spoken in Albania and Kosovo (former Yugoslavian Federation), by some 6 million people.

There are two dialects with major phonological and lexicological differences between them, Tosk and Gheg. Standard Albanian is based heavily on Tosk, which is the official language of Albania.

Written Albanian survived Ottoman rule for four centuries. From the end of the 19th c., literature in this language flourished, but stagnated when the Communist regime was established after World War II.

This is an
inflected language, and noun declension features four cases. The verb system is as complex and irregular as in French or Spanish. Albanian borrowed words from Old Greek, Latin, Bulgarian, and Turkish.
